3 punts 3

Àngels Ribé (*1943, Spain) left Franco’s Spain in 1969 to study ceramics and sociology in Paris. She then moved to the US, where she lived in Chicago and New York. She returned to Barcelona in the now democratic Spain in 1980. Her first works included a conceptual form of sculpture called Acció al parc (1969), in which children were able to interact with an object made of plastic in a park in Paris. In the early 1970s, she developed works out of ephemeral materials, such as light, shadow, foam and water (3 punts, 1973). In her American period, she made her mark with performances and installations (Stork-Woman, 1976). She began working with sculptures in the mid-1980s. In 2011, the MACBA in Barcelona devoted a retrospective to her significant conceptual works in the period 1969–1984, during which Ribé primarily investigated the role of the body in space. JE

In the beginning of the 1970s, Àngels Ribé developed a series of works dedicated to measuring space with minimal means. In the installation 3 punts 1, a string casts a shadow on a wall. 3 punts 2 is a photo-diptych in which the shadow cast by Ribé’s body is marked with a stick. In 3 punts 3 (3 point 3), a body standing
in front of a white wall is a reference for all kinds of measurements – the face remains unrecognisable, and we can only identify the body as a woman’s: it is a figurative abstraction. Existence is measured on the basis of one’s own body, and the surrounding space is affirmatively claimed.
