Fabienne Dumont
Feminist Performance Art in France in the 1970s

An art historian, art critic and professor of art history, Fabienne Dumont has published extensively in France and internationally. Her research concerns contemporary art focussing on feminist, gender, queer, masculinities and class issues, including aspects of migration and postcolonialism. She held teaching positions at Paris Panthéon Sorbonne University (2005), Lumière Lyon II, EESAB (École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne, 2011-2018) in Quimper and ENSA (École nationale supérieure d'art et de design) in Nancy. She received her HDR (accreditation to supervise research) at Université Rennes 2 on the subject of “Feminist Metamorphoses” in 2022. In 2019, she was co-curator of the Nil Yalter retrospective at MAC VAL - Musée d’art contemporain du Val-de-Marne.

Of all the ’68s in France, women artists were at the center of two radical movements: the women’s liberation movement and the effervescence of politicized artistic practices dominated by men. In this context, many women artists broke with their past practices and sought to fit their feminist awareness with the meaning of their art. Several groups of women artists also emerged which provided the framework for several performances, while others were carried out independently. This talk analyzes some of these performances - particularly in relation to the historical context in France (Orlan, Lea Lublin,
Françoise Janicot, Gina Pane, Nil Yalter, Nicola L, Lygia Clark, etc.).
